Llanthony priory

Llanthony Priory was an Augustinian monastery. It was one of the first Augustinian houses in Britain. Its location set in the Black Mountains of Wales, in the Vale of Ewyas, makes it a remote and quiet place to visit. You will encounter tourists, but not many, and it is this seclusion that makes the priory so worth a visit. The Black Mountains surround you, which allows for beautiful views.

Since the priory is free to visit, it is well worth the budget travelers time. It is a romantic ruin, and is set near a working farm where kids will be delighted to see horses. It is about eight miles north of Abergavenny (which is in its own right WELL worth a visit!). Abergavenny would be a good base to tour the surrounding countryside.
