Harlech Castle -Sentinel of Snowdonia

View from Harlech Castle

Harlech Castle

Perched like a guardian on a rocky promentory, Harlech castle stands ready to guard the surrounding mountains and sea. The view from the castle over the area is a rare one – you can see the sea and mountains on a clear day.

The castle itself was built for Edward I, as he set out to subdue the wild Welsh. The concentric castle would have deterred all but the most determined assailant. The castle itself did fall to Owain Glyndwr, the last Welsh prince who tried to revolt against English rule. Harlech was retaken after a long siege by the English.

The massive gatehouse is still awe-inspiring even today. When I visited, I felt as if I was stepping back in time since the gatehouse looks very much as it would have back in the middle ages. Come see Harlech – for the views and for the history.
